From
the name alone, one can tell Jiri has Czech roots, however this MD has
strong Filipino roots as well.
Although he was born and raised in
Vancouver
, Jiri has had the opportunity to travel to many countries. He lived in
the
Philippines
for some time where he learned to speak Tagalog and Bicol; the hometown
dialect of his mother Zeny Valenciano.
Jiri went to high school at
David
Thompson Secondary in
Vancouver
, then immediately continued his formal education at UBC to obtain his BSc
and MD degrees back to back. He continued with his Family Medicine
residency and followed it up with Emergency Medicine residency training
afterward. He served as Chief Resident for his entire residency and was
nominated for the distinguished Murray Staker National Award given to one
family Medicine resident in
Canada
annually.
Jiri is also an accomplished medical illustrator with his works published in
international medical journals and texts. Jiri's research experience
included work for 3 years at the BC Cancer Agency and resulted in several
first-authorship medical publications in the US, Canada, The United
Kingdom, and Australia. Jiri is also one of four main authors who wrote a
clinical textbook used by medical students around the world. Jiri
continues to contribute to academia, however his heart remains focused in
clinical work and taking care of his patients.
After doing two years of E.R. work exclusively, Jiri is very pleased to have
set up a clinical practice at Cedar Hills and has become a strong resource
to his community. His ability to speak Tagalog, Bicol, and other languages
serve as a formidable asset in his clinic and in the E.R. He is proud of
both his Czech and Filipino roots, and he welcomes all to his new
practice.
