Jhet
Torcelino-van Ruyven is a book author and inspirational speaker whose
rags-to-riches story in her book “The Tale of Juliet” has been
described as “profound and compelling…the remarkable story of one
woman's rise from poverty to prosperity.”
Since she had her book
launch at the Chapters Bookstore in Metrotown in October 2005, it became
an instant bestseller. Over 10,000 copies have been sold worldwide
and it is still selling. She received an honorable mention for Best
Regional Non-Fiction in Western Canada at the 10th
Ann
ual Independent Publisher Book Award in Washington D.C. Jhet is now
invited as an inspirational and motivational speaker by groups, schools,
and workplaces in the
Philippines
and abroad because of her book. In the
Philippines
. her book serves as an inspiration to legions of Overseas Foreign Workers
(OFW) who seek greener pastures abroad. She has been interviewed on
television, published in the local media and was “People of the Year”
Awardee by People Asia Magazine in 2005. She had the pleasure to have an
audience with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo at the
Malacanang
Palace
.
Juliet Torcelino,
better known by her nickname “Jhet” is the second eldest of eleven
siblings. She grew up in a small
village
of
Pader
in Batangas, living in a one-room house without running water and
electricity. Her father, a personal driver in
Manila
, had a hard time supporting the family. Jhet had to help by selling,
fruits, vegetables and candies along
Matabungcay
Beach
. She continued being a vendor until she was in high school.
The course of Jhet's
life changed when a priest, Father Antonio B. Unson, (now a Monsignor),
met her and saw some potential in the poor girl. The priest helped her
enroll at La Concordia College, an exclusive school in
Manila
where she earned a Medical Secretary Certificate. She worked in the
laundry room and washed dishes to pay for her room and board.
After graduation, Jhet
worked in a
Manila
hospital for eight years. She found love but when she broke up with her
boyfriend, she decided to leave for the
Yemen
Arab
Republic
where she worked in a hospital for an oil company. While doing some
volunteer work for the Sisters of Charity, she met Ted van Ruyven, a Dutch
man working as an engineer in
Yemen
. Ted married her in
Manila
and brought her to
Holland
. They later immigrated to
Canada
and lived in
South Surrey
. The couple is blessed with two lovely daughters: Michelle
Chris
tine and Catherine Maria.
Jhet started a
home-based business, enjoyed success in sales that she earned every
all-expenses-paid trips offered by her company including jaunts to
San Francisco
,
Toronto
and
Arizona
. In 1994, she bought her first business, the
Ocean
Park
Business
Center
. Two years later, she expanded her business and opened the Digi-Print
Graphics Plus in
Surrey
. The business started to flourish and in 1996, Jhet was nominated for
“Business Woman of the Year” in
Surrey
, a recognition of her remarkable achievement.
Jhet has been putting
plans in place that will help her accomplish her newly defined mission –
to inspire people to reach their full potential. Through books and
workshops, she is doing her best to pass on a message of hope and
determination. Jhet Torcelino Ruyven is a wonderful example of the power
