 Oscar
F. Tiu is one of the first Filipinos to manage and operate a travel agency
in
British Columbia
. While working as Cashier and Property Officer at the Philiippine
Consulate General in
Vancouver
, he helped many Filipinos in making arrangements for their travel tickets
to the
Philippines
, especially those who needed to fly home for family emergencies.
When he resigned from
his job at the Philippine Consulate, Oscar became a partner and manager of
a newly opened travel agency which started to get the support of the
growing Filipino community in
British Columbia
. Later, he saw a need to be on his own and he established Oscar Travel
Services Ltd in 1977. Oscar Travel, a member of ACTA and IATA, specializes
in Balikbayan travel through Philippine Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Japan
Airlines, United Airlines, Korean Airlines and Air
Canada
. It also arranges package tours (air only) to
Reno
,
Las Vegas
,
Hawaii
and
Mexico
.
Oscar Travel has a
money remittance business to major cities and almost anywhere in the
Philippines
. Many clients use the money remittance service, finding it safe and
convenient to send financial help to their families and loved ones in the
country. They also find it helpful to deal with the company especially in
case of immediate need for extra cash while vacationing in the
Philippines
.
Oscar was born and
raised in
Dapitan
City
, Zamboanga del Norte. He graduated from
Andres
Bonifacio
College
in
Dipolog
City
with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Commerce, major in Accounting.
In 1966, he worked at the Department of Foreign Affairs in
Manila
. One year later, he was assigned to the Philippine Consulate General in
Vancouver
as Cashier and Property Officer. It was in this capacity that Oscar
developed wide contact with the local Filipino community, earning many
friends and accolades for his reliable service and excellent public
relations.
Oscar was very active
in supporting various community organizations in
Vancouver
. He was a board member of the YMCA Philippine Service Club that helped
raise funds to support various development projects for the poor in
depressed areas of the country. He was former president of the Philippine
Community Centre Society (PCCS) and director of the
Bisayan Circle
and the Mindanao Association of BC. Presently, Oscar is director of the
Philippines Canada Trade Council, and the Philippine Golf Association of
BC. An avid golfer, he is manager of PAL Inter Club Golf Tournament and
Director of the PCTC Golf Tournament. – LBC
